My Private Basketball Training Session With Chris Corbett

Chris and I met through a mutual friend and upon first talking to Chris on the phone, I remember him asking me a series of questions to try to get to know me and my background. He asked me what my aspirations were for the game of basketball and I told him that I was serious about playing college basketball and Chris graciously offered me to train with him for one session at Lifetime Fitness on a Sunday morning. So going into the training I was excited to have someone train me and get to know my game a little bit.

Chris had never seen me play before so the first thing we did was play one on one which I was glad he did that because I knew right away he knew what he was doing because I am a firm believer in how one on one against someone better than you is the best way to get better and to learn about someone’s game. So during the games of one on one and Chris was testing me in certain areas to see how my game was and after we played Chris automatically knew what type of player I was, what type of player I could become, and how I could make myself marketable and available for the college level. So then he put me through some series of some game like drills and we got up a lot of shots.

Chris is really big on footwork basketball lessons and making sure the toes are always squared up with the rim. The greatest aspect of Chris’ teaching is that he tries to maximize your strengths as a player and minimize your weaknesses. I learned a lot from the two and a half hours we spent in the gym together and I would highly recommend him to anyone interested in personal lessons. He is a great teacher and tells you what he thinks with complete honesty and I respect him greatly for the time he was willing to work with me.

Creatine and The Teen Basketball Player

The subject of creatine has come up recently with a few of our students.  Parents and players should have a discussion about performance enhancing supplements and drugs.  This discussion needs to occur early on (think 12.)  It is in our locker rooms and coaches often encourage creatine to give players an edge and help them experience expedited strength gains.  Parents have asked me my opinion on creatine.

Here it is.  I am not comfortable with it.  Most doctors I speak with that are not “team” doctors are not comfortable with it either.  Read this link from the prestigious Mayo Clinic. (http://www NULL.mayoclinic NULL.com/health/performance-enhancing-drugs/SM00045)

Growing bodies may not be a fit for supplements not regulated by the FDA.  The NCAA does not permit creatine to be distributed by it’s member universities.  Creatine has been known to be a stepping stone to steroids.   Professional trainers whomI respect do not recomend it for teen basketball players.

The choice will ultimately be your child’s.  You owe it to your family to have an informed conversation that may include your physician.

Would My Child Benefit From Private Training?

Private Basketball Training for Austin Middle and High School Players

I recently have had some huge  success while teaching kids in the private basketball training sessions.  My wife will be happy to tell anyone that I am prone to patting myself on the back so I  evaluated exactly why the kids had made such impressive breakthroughs.  The children were varied in age (10-16), skill levels,  and gender.  Here is what they did have in common:

  • Unbridled joy for the game.  Each of their faces lit up as they entered the gym and several million dollar smiles ensued over our time together.
  • Each player had above average listening skills and a high aptitude for learning.
  • Each player viewed the hard work we did as a game.   They were energized by our activity.
  • Three of the Four Players shared their goals without me asking.  The fourth player had some very definite ideas about direction when asked.
  • None of the four were  spectacular “thoroughbred” athletes.  None were accustomed to muscling thru, outjumping, or flying by their competition at an elite level.

This list of attributes is not meant to exclude someone from being a private training candidate.  It is merely some notes I compiled in evaluating them in order to customize a program for them.  If your child shows these attributes, they may be a fit for our private training.  Austin Youth Basketball offers limited private training sessions for children 8 to 18.
