Geoff Harner Hoops In Lithuania

imagejpeg-2Geoff:  My recent trip to Lithuania was an opportunity to play in front of top league coaches in the LKL or NKL. I played on a tour team which is comprised of selected USA basketball talent.

Chris:  What should we know about Lithuania as a country? What is their basketball like? How are players different there?

Lithuania Pro BasketballBasketball in Lithuania is very strong and the people put the sport before soccer. The country itself is very refined and up to date. Technology and architectural structures were state of the art. As a matter of fact the hotel I stayed at was brand new with everything I needed.  The players I played against were very lean, tall, and were fundamentally sound. Everyone could shoot and the timing and screen setting was almost impossible to guard at times. There was very little dribbling but the execution of backdoor cuts and reading screens was incredible! On a side note, they had great dynamic warmup and and performed static stretching after the games.

Chris:  Picking up and leaving Austin can’t always be easy- tell us about the role of your basketball passion in this trip?

European pro basketballGeoff:  It is difficult to make decisions when u have bills to pay at home, a family, and of course coaching at AYB. This Lithuania trip was based on my everlasting passion for the game and I was blessed to get the opportunity . I knew from when I was invited that someone will notice my talent. The teams and players saw it and was able to make an impression for next summer where I will possibly go back for a week to coach youth and workout for some teams out there. I realized my playing time wasn’t sufficient enough to show everything I do but I made the most out of the times I was in. I thought about the “masterpiece minute” which is a tactic we use at AYB. I played the best I could no matter what the result!

Chris: What obstacles do you face as a passionate professional trying to do your thing that helps you relate to some of the struggles our younger players face?

You may be that player that produces big numbers for one team, but in this case I had to accept a role whether it be politics or a systematic reason. It was difficult at first but I was able to adjust and accept it. I was the guy communicating to my teammates while playing good defense and scoring if I needed to. My emotions and opinions meant nothing to coaches. You go out there and you play the game and listen to coaches demands. Producing is big on the pro level but I must say that it’s important on every level of basketball.

Chris: Learn anything from Lithuania system you look forward to sharing with our kids?

One main skill I would say is how to set screens on and off the ball. Reading the defense and recognizing space is very important as well. All players sprinted to their spots and did exactly what their coach asked them. It was tough for my team because we played very fast and went for one on one situations more instead of sharing the ball. I look forward to teaching this to AYB students as soon as I get back to the United States.

Chase For The Cure

Chase For The CureEvery week at my job I get to meet some pretty incredible kids.  Meet Chase Johnson.  This guy and his positive attitude stood out from the first day of camp last Spring Break.    Chase is the founder of  ChasefortheCure.net (http://www NULL.Chaseforthecure NULL.net) – a hoopathon designed to raise awareness of epilepsy and to raise funds to find a cure.  I strongly urge you to support this fun event.  Some of you may know that I personally have suffered several seizures thru the years and I can attest that awareness is an important issue for the friends and families of epileptics as well as the potential witnesses to epileptic seizures.

I also wanted to share some insight into the mind of this incredible young man.  Here is an interview Chase was kind enough to do with me.

Chase- you and I have known each other thru our Austin Basketball Camps.  Tell our readers a little about what epilepsy is and how many young people it affects across the country and the world.

Epilepsy means the same thing as “seizure disorders” and is characterized by unpredictable seizures and can cause other health problems. The symptoms of a seizure may affect any part of the body, the electrical events that produce the symptoms occur in the brain. The location of that event, how it spreads and how much of the brain is affected, and how long it lasts all have profound effects

Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder and affects people of all ages. It is estimated that nearly 3 million Americans are currently diagnosed with epilepsy; 300,000 of which are children and youth 14 and younger. Of the 200,000 new cases of epilepsy diagnosed each year, it is estimated that approximately 50,000 of these will be diagnosed in children and adolescents under the age of 18.

I need to ask you Chase… you are ten… tell me about the day you came up with this idea and how your mind moved this from an idea to an actual event.  Tell me who has been helpful to you in making this happen.

My friend and I came up with the idea when we realized that people were only recognizing Diabetes and other diseases but not Epilepsy, Asthma and others. So we sent a note to our Principal with an idea and he said he would love for us to do something but that we would have to run the whole thing. From there I met with the Epilepsy Foundation of Central and South Texas, Dripping Springs High School Basketball Coaches, and Dripping Springs Youth Sports Association. And of course my parents.  Everything else just evolved from there.

What exactly is this event and why are people so excited about it?

We are having our first annual Hoop*a*Thon and skills challenge to raise awareness for people with epilepsy and to help raise money to help get kids into Camp Brainstorm.  Camp Brainstorm is a camp for kids with epilepsy that cannot go to regular camps. It should be a very exciting fun day that everybody will enjoy.

So many people are great at spotting problems in this world.  Yet so many of us stop after the spotting stage.  How did you move from spotting to solving mode?

After I came up with the idea I met with my principal and my dad to help me set up a foundation and from then we just started to evolve more and more till we finally came up with the idea to start the process for a hoop*a*thon.

This is a pretty cool mission.  It is an honor to call you a friend Chase.  How can people interested in helping give a hand to make a difference?

People can help make a difference by just signing up to participate, or donating money or prizes for our silent auction. We have created a website where people can get more information or reach out to us to help (www.chaseforthecure.net (http://www NULL.chaseforthecure NULL.net/)) or follow me on twitter (#chaseforthecure).

Refereed Pickup Basketball with good men and women who celebrate their ability or effort to enjoy the game and walk away injury free (ish.)  Will include basketball trainer  Chris Corbett leading the group thru a 10 minute dynamic warmup and a cool down after the game.  10 Week program most likely on a recurring basis if this concept gains traction.   Parents and friends of Austin Youth Basketball family inspired this idea and we are sponsoring this night as a thank you.   Our first night was a huge success with 14 out of 15 players asking for it to become a regular program.

Austin, Texas 78736

By Invitation, for former high school and college level players.  Male and female players.  Want an invitation? Email me @ chris@austinyouthbasketball.com.  No psycho competitors.  Bill Laimbeers, or wannabees definitively not welcome. 2. Because you have never had and never will find a workout you love like basketball.
  3. Because you can actually get in better shape as you get older… it is just harder.
  4. Because it is fun and you deserve to have fun too.
  5. To role model for your kids.

How To Register

Please go thru the registration process so we can limit the amount of players. We are only allowing the first 18 registrants and there has been a fair amount of interest.  Please do not text or email me to register.  Feel free to contact me with questions, but we need a firm headcount.  Registration will be open to the “Founders” (first-night supporters) for 24 hours then we will open it up to the rest of our friends.
