My son thoroughly enjoyed his Austin Youth Basketball Skills Class and Summer Camp at Lifetime Fitness in Southwest Austin. Coach Chris Corbett is an excellent teacher who has a passion both for basketball and for teaching kids fundamental basketball skills.
SKILLS: Coach Chris believes that basketball skills training and drills are the keys to improvement. Every class Coach Chris teaches essential skills such as passing, dribbling, shooting, and defense. The kids spend most of the class developing those skills through practice.
MOTIVATION: As with other sports, a great basketball player must be passionate about the sport. Coach Chris lives that passion and he passes it on to his class. He is always positive and encourages the kids.
LIFE SKILLS: Coach Chris takes the time to teach important life skills related to basketball but also useful for life in general. For example, during one class the coach explained to the kids that basketball — like life — is not always fair, but they have to keep trying, not complain, and keep their heads up.
FUN: Skills training and drills are the key to becoming a better basketball player, but kids are kids and they want to play the game. Toward the end of class, Coach Chris rewards the kids by making teams and allowing them to scrimmage.
COMMUNICATION: Coach Chris does an outstanding job of communicating with parents. He praises basketball strengths and candidly identifies any areas that need improvement. It is clear that Coach Chris watches each kid closely and wants all of his class to become the best basketball players they can be.
