What Your Budding Point Guard May Crave and Need

I work with many point guards at the middle school and high school level who have a passion and love to grow and excel in their leadership on the floor. They ask for more. They learn a drill and come back better the following week.   If they are dedicated to their craft, then a worthwhile investment would be the Point Guard DVD Series by Ganon Baker.

The material is top notch, engaging, and inspiring. Amare Stoudamire, Kobe, and Lebron have all hired Ganon to coach them and he is America’s premiere player development coach. When I am challenged in a development area, Ganon is always there to take my call. He really cares. Check out the link:

Dr. Daniel Howard – A Pediatrician That Cares

Austin Youth Basketball Recommends Pediatrician (http://austinyouthbasketball NULL.com/2010/06/21/dr-daniel-howard-a-pediatrician-that-cares/dr-daniel-howard/)
Pediatrician Who Cares...Really Cares!

The Austin Youth Basketball Family depends on each other for advice, word of mouth referrals, and feedback about the people who help our children grow.  I recently had a miserable experience that many parents may be able to relate to.

Our daughter was very ill last week… extreme vomiting for 5 days, dehydrated, wimpering in her sleep during her fevers, and getting a bit worse every day.  We struggled to get an appointment with a doctor as her pediatrician was out of town.  We finally were able to secure an appointment with Dr. Daniel Howard.  We arrived late after getting stuck in Thursday traffic on Mopac.  We were the last appointment of the evening so it forced the doctor to stay late.  Dr. Howard was compassionate, an excellent listener, and performed a half hour exam.   He then ordered bloodwork which extended our stay and some more tests.  His family was waiting for him to come home.  He proceeded to outline our options and the fact that he had no conclusive answers.  He told us we needed to see our pediatrician tomorrow and when we explained she was on vacation with no replacement, he made room on his schedule the next day.  He was genuinely concerned about my daughter.

Again, we were his last appointment of the day on a Friday.  He ordered yet more bloodwork after carefully explaining our options and his concerns.  He had the work rushed to the lab and  told me he would call me that evening when the results were rushed to him.  He called me that evening just before 9pm with the results that Ellie appeared to be improving and to stay the course and be in touch on Monday.

When our children are truly sick and you feel like no one has answers, it is good to know that doctors like Dr. Howard still care enough to go above and beyond to care for our most treasured possessions.  He was exceptional.  So is his resume.  Check it out:  Stanford bachelors degree, Masters in Public Health, MD from prestigious Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.  Here is his number: 512.901.4016.

I enjoyed a wonderful Father’s Day with a little girl who was quickly recovering.  Thank you Dr. Howard!

Austin Youth and Kids Basketball Leagues…We Need To Talk

Basket ball positions. Legend: # point guard: ... (http://commons NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Image:Basketball_positions NULL.svg)
Image via Wikipedia (http://commons NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Image:Basketball_positions NULL.svg)

In a basketball private training session I had today a slightly disturbing experience.  I worked out with a 11 year old boy who had just finished playing in one of Greater Austin’s youth basketball leagues.  This league will remain anonymous.

The boy was a polite, smart, attentive and focused young man who clearly came from a good family background.  I asked him to assume a triple threat position… he could not.  I asked him to execute a jump stop… he did not know what it was.  I asked him to assume a defensive stance and execute a defensive slide.  He did not know what I was talking about.

Once the look of shock wore off my face, I realized that his youth basketball team coach was probably a well intentioned Dad who gave up his own leisure time to do the very best he could for his son/daughter and their team.  Perhaps the child learned these basketball basics and forgot  them.  I asked if that was possible.  Definitely not.  He had never heard of these concepts.  He was, however,  able to execute a drop step after 15 minutes of instruction, mastered (at a very basic level) rip thrus, jump stops, and defensive sliding all in the remaining 30 minutes.  He had a high learning aptitude for basketball fundamentals.  This aptitude had been wasted for the last season.

It reminded me of a team of 13 year olds I coached in Manhattan Beach, CA  many years ago.  Some of the teams we faced in the league had 3 different traps, 5 out of bounds plays, 2 set offenses, and….. 50% free throw shooting, kids dribbling with their heads down, a complete lack of trust in their teammates, complete inability to box out with sound technique, and an obsession with the three point line.

We are failing these kids.

The question then becomes: “How can Austin Youth Basketball best help these kids basketball leagues throughout Greater Austin?”  I am open to proposals.  Bring your ideas.  Here is mine.  Get every coach in your league (and I do mean every coach) together in one gym and we will go over the fundamental essentials that each child deserves.  We can also go over the essentials of practice planning.  Our focus will be teaching the coaches to teach the kids how to play.  If you want to teach the kids plays (Xs and Os) rather than how to play- this will not be a fit.  If your primary goal is a championship trophy- this may not  be a fit.  I suspect that is not the reason most of you have gone into youth sports.

Each coach deserves a chance to make a difference.  Their hearts are in the right place.  Many coaches need coaches.  This will greatly enhance the experience for the player and the basketball coach.

We can help.  Each Austin basketball league will be different in terms of needs and this will need to be customized.  Fees will be negotiable.  This is bigger than dollars and cents.  Email me at chris@austinyouthbasketball.com (chris null@null austinyouthbasketball NULL.com)  to chat about your league and how we can help put on a coaches clinic.  Many of you have done a great job moving in this direction.  Others need help.  Together we can make a difference

Basketball Classes For 11 -14 Year Olds

Our seven week program is designed to ensure that sound fundamentals are in place for our players and then to advance in offensive moves, spacing, team defense, and some light scrimmaging.  Station work is introduced so each player can be evaluated in order to magnify their strengths and address any weaknesses.  Fun is still a major focus of the workouts.
