Austin Basketball Tryout Tips

Tips for Austin Basketball Tryouts

Contributed by Chris Price

One of the most important times for young basketball players is fast approaching: basketball tryouts.  As someone who has been a part of many different tryouts in my basketball life, I wanted to share some tips to help you maximize your upcoming opportunity.

Tip #1: Remember that a basketball tryout is an opportunity.Austin Basketball Tryout Tips

The mere thought of a tryout causes some to become nervous and anxious.  But remember, a tryout is not a place where you hope to do enough not to get cut.  No, a tryout is a place to show the coach what you’ve got.  Especially if you’re in a situation where the coach hasn’t seen you play at all, or seen you play recently, it’s up to you to show him your skills.  At one tryout of mine, the coach called me over at the end.  He told me that he could tell I was a good player, but he couldn’t justify keeping me over the other guys who played great during the tryout.  I was doing too much fitting in and trying not to mess up instead of trying to stand out.  Take it from me, if you have the attitude of not messing up or just fitting in, you might not show the coach how great you are at that skill you’ve worked on all summer.  Have the attitude that you are going to take the opportunity to show the coaches what you CAN do, and you will be more successful.

Tip #2: Do it afraid and the nerves will go away.

The thought of a tryout still makes ME nervous, and I’ve been playing basketball for almost 20 years.  What I’ve learned is that it is natural to be nervous.  But don’t let your nervousness stop you from showing up.  Once they roll the balls out and you take your first shot, get your first steal or get your first rebound, those ‘butterflies’ will go away.  Eventually your heart and mind will realize that it’s just basketball, and this is what you do.  You have prepared and looked forward to do this day for a long time now.  That nervousness will go away and that hunger will start to rise again!

Tip #3: Stand out with your ears and your feet.

Do you know what a coach is looking for at a basketball tryout?  If you don’t, I’ll tell you.  A coach is looking for players that can help him win.  Remember that basketball is a team game, and it takes players working together under the direction of their coach to be successful.  So when the coach is giving direction at tryouts, listen intently to what he is saying.  Be the one that gets the drill right the first time, and ALSO be the one that is running to the drills, through the drills or to the middle for more instruction.  Show a great attitude in receiving and executing instruction because “I forgot”, “I’m not sure” and “I didn’t hear that” doesn’t get you far in the game of basketball.  Having the right attitude in regards to given instruction will go a long way in the eyes of your coach.

We wish you the all best at your upcoming basketball tryouts.  Go get what you’ve worked for!

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR READING WHY SMALL BUSINESS MATTERS TO AMERICA

Nine months ago I left corporate America to embark full time on my mission to improve American Basketball one player and one click at a time.

My mission takes on a pretty crazy scope some days and I love the challenges and the opportunities.  But most of all, I love my customers.  Not the checks they write, but each and everyone of my customers.  Our business was built on solving a need in the marketplace of kids playing more and more basketball and not really improving or gaining confidence.  It was built on listening to that need and personalizing solutions to each of our customers.  The texts, emails, and phone calls we get everyday from our customers sharing their success mean the world to me and their financial support makes our mission a sustainable reality while breathing life into my own family.

American Small Business and Austin Youth BasketballSo why is this story important?

1.  The 27 million small businesses in America account for approximately 70% of all American jobs.

2.  Innovation – Small business produces 13x the amount of patents that larger firms do and patents are just a small measure of innovation.  Austin Youth Basketball innovates by bringing advanced player development learning to the youth basketball player.

3.  We solve problems.  Our nature is to listen and solve problems rather than to create products.   We have the luxury of caring and being in closer contact to the needs of our customer.  That’s right, relationships still matter.

4.  Fulfillment.   As corporate America goes thru their next round of layoffs (all during record profits and soaring salaries,) the small business owner strives to design a business that provides self reliance, innovation, and yes… happiness.  Do they always succeed?  No.  But is the pursuit of happiness and independence thru innovation and customer centric business a worthwhile goal?  Yes.  Resounding Yes.  We tell our basketball players to stop waiting to get picked… to pick themselves.   American small business does that every day.  Research indicates this generation does not aspire to become corporate mavens.  I recommend talking to your children and hearing their thoughts.

So in conclusion- I want to thank all of my customers who support my small business.  I also want to thank them for sharing their families with my family.  I want to thank my family for not laughing at my idea and encouraging me every step (both forward and backward) of the way.  And to everyone that said and encouraging word along the way… thank you.

American Small Business is uniquely qualified to help America build another great economy and your support fuels that.  You rock!

Austin Youth Basketball Players & College Scholarships

The odds of making a college basketball team are minuscule.  Only 5% of all Varsity basketball players get to make a college basketball team. Getting a college scholarship is even tougher.  If you are determined to chase your dream- more power to you! Hope this helped.  Thanks for a great job to my teammates Kyle and Dave at www.BasketballHQ.com (http://basketballhq NULL.com/) for producing this.  Special thanks to the contributing college coaches.

Our philosophy at Austin Youth Basketball is not to market ourselves as the magic wand for college basketball.  We do offer expert and passionate basketball advice to give each kid the tools they need to become the best they can be.   Giving kids that platform is how we measure ourselves.  Did we have a positive impact on a player’s game?  Have we helped increase the sense of Passion, Purpose and Power in each player?  Have we taught personal development skills that transfer off the court?  Each day we ask ourselves those questions.  Let us know if we can do anything to help your basketball journey.

Stuff I Learn From Ten Year Old Basketball Players

Basketball InspirationI work as a basketball trainer for kids from ages 9 to about 21. And my role is to teach them footwork, balance, aggressive moves, shooting form, general basketball IQ, defensive principles, and the fundamentals of the game. Many parents have told me they bring their kids to me to help them learn life lessons.

No parent has told me they bring their kids to me in order that I learn some life lessons. But yesterday was kind of different.

We ended our weekly session with a game of one on one between two of our ten year old players.  There is a sizable skills gap between the two of them.  The boy (we will call him Jack) is a perfectionist who is relentless in perfecting his moves that we work on. He is driven and is learning to balance control with aggressive offensive principles.  The girl Ally  (real name with permission) is newer to the game.  She. too, is highly athletic and has a frame and muscular development that tab her as a future thoroughbred.  Her skills are naturally not as developed as the more experienced boy.

One on one was a formula for disaster from the start and the talented young man really started to destroy the promising but yet unskilled young lady.  Jack blocked nearly every one of Ally’s shots.  Jack scored at will and made several steals after discovering her rhythmic dribbling.  He was a good sport, and played ethically but clearly smelled victory.  Ally continued to work hard, made some key adjustments on defense, put dents in the floor with her dribble, executed several great between the legs dribbles, made great decisions… and still was getting crushed.

Ally never once wimpered. Never once complained about how completely unfair the matchup was.  She never complained about the poor referee (me) who let the boy continue to be very physical.  Never looked at her mom for moral support.  She put her head down and worked harder.

So the fairy tale ending would tell you how she overcame a 15 point deficit to come back and beat Jack.  But that is not how it happened.

The training session ended. I approached Ally and she teared up.  Not temper tantrum tears. Not “why did you do that to me.”  These were tears of passion and frustration. She cared deeply about her performance.  Imagine a ten year old being all in.  All in despite the odds against her.  Not one excuse.  Just all in with her whole heart.  All in to the point it hurt.  Accountability to the point that you look inside, not point fingers.  We will teach Ally how to lose without beating herself up,we will teach her skills,  but teaching passion is far more difficult. Ally  is Passion.  Yesterday was a failure.   The type of failure that breeds success, fulfillment, and greatness.  I would not bet against Ally beating a lot of boys in one on one over the years.

In short Ally can teach us all how to:Austin Basketball Trainer and Ally Beck

1. Be all in.
2. Don’t make excuses.
3. Be passionate, even if it hurts.

Thank you Ally Beck. You are going to be an amazing young player.

And I am your #1 fan.
