Dr. Daniel Howard – A Pediatrician That Cares

Austin Youth Basketball Recommends Pediatrician (http://austinyouthbasketball NULL.com/2010/06/21/dr-daniel-howard-a-pediatrician-that-cares/dr-daniel-howard/)
Pediatrician Who Cares...Really Cares!

The Austin Youth Basketball Family depends on each other for advice, word of mouth referrals, and feedback about the people who help our children grow.  I recently had a miserable experience that many parents may be able to relate to.

Our daughter was very ill last week… extreme vomiting for 5 days, dehydrated, wimpering in her sleep during her fevers, and getting a bit worse every day.  We struggled to get an appointment with a doctor as her pediatrician was out of town.  We finally were able to secure an appointment with Dr. Daniel Howard.  We arrived late after getting stuck in Thursday traffic on Mopac.  We were the last appointment of the evening so it forced the doctor to stay late.  Dr. Howard was compassionate, an excellent listener, and performed a half hour exam.   He then ordered bloodwork which extended our stay and some more tests.  His family was waiting for him to come home.  He proceeded to outline our options and the fact that he had no conclusive answers.  He told us we needed to see our pediatrician tomorrow and when we explained she was on vacation with no replacement, he made room on his schedule the next day.  He was genuinely concerned about my daughter.

Again, we were his last appointment of the day on a Friday.  He ordered yet more bloodwork after carefully explaining our options and his concerns.  He had the work rushed to the lab and  told me he would call me that evening when the results were rushed to him.  He called me that evening just before 9pm with the results that Ellie appeared to be improving and to stay the course and be in touch on Monday.

When our children are truly sick and you feel like no one has answers, it is good to know that doctors like Dr. Howard still care enough to go above and beyond to care for our most treasured possessions.  He was exceptional.  So is his resume.  Check it out:  Stanford bachelors degree, Masters in Public Health, MD from prestigious Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.  Here is his number: 512.901.4016.

I enjoyed a wonderful Father’s Day with a little girl who was quickly recovering.  Thank you Dr. Howard!

Back Pain and Basketball

I recently trained a young man who had been suffering from back stiffness and shooting pains going down his leg and settling in his back.  He had been suffering from these pains for about 6 months.   Before you start doing advance complex movements like deadlifts for basketball (http://www NULL.richstoner NULL.com/the-deadlift-and-basketball-players), we recommend you start with great instruction on form.  We shut down his workouts and I referred him to the team at Pro Care Spine.  Pro Care Spine is an integrated medical clinic offering MDs, Chiropractic Care, Physical Therapy, and Therapeutic massage.   My student was pain free one week later and Dr. Ian Jones was kind enough to outline a regimen of care and caution that got us back to work.  Dr. Neil Boecking is a former hoops player and CEO Brent Boecking still has love for the game despite ankle issues that don’t permit him to play any longer.  The young man we all worked on is now working with personal trainer Rusty Kutzer to develop muscular balance and build his core and lumbar strength.  Rusty has a degree in kineseology as well as the top certifications in his field.   Rusty is a great hoops player in his own right.

Two very solid resources:

Private Basketball Training Parents Review Austin Youth Basketball

I want to start by saying thank you.  With the few lessons that Christopher has taken, it has impacted his game tremendously in a positive way.  From being comfortable at the C/F position to wanting to play guard and move the ball around.

Last week he did a basketball camp at Akins and they were impressed with his footwork.  Honestly, I have to thank you for that, because I really did not work with him on his footwork.

So, if you can send me some information on your basketball camps, I can run them past both my kids to see if this is something they want to do in August.

In the fall, he decided not to play football, because he loving basketball way too much.  I told him, whenever, he is ready to play he can play.  I’m the dad that won’t force my kids to do things their heart is not into.  If their is something they really want to do, I’m there for them.

My wife also agreed with me, that you love the game and you are a great coach, so we thank you.  Trust me, my son and I are very picky who coaches him.

Player Development Results

Chris, Alfred had his first team practice yesterday and I just wanted to truly thank you again for the wonderful job that you have done with my son.  It has been a while since I have seen him playing with kids his own age,and I was blown away by how much more advanced he is compared to the other kids.  He has been working very hard on his game… and again we really appreciate all of your help. YOU ARE WORTH  your price per session and more, and we are thrilled to have you helping us on Alfred’s basketball journey.  So would the 20th at 9am work for you? Again thanks for your help and thanks for the passion that you bring whenever you’re working with my son.  By the way he will be at the Drills to Skills camp and any other camp that you think would be a fit for him.
