Our Deepest Fear

Does your play defer to others even though you can make the open shot you passed up on?   Do you rise to the occasion?  Do you really believe in yourself?  Consider this poem and watch the video.  If you are a parent, read and watch together with your young basketball player.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, handsome, talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.

Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us.
It is not just in some; it is in everyone.

And, as we let our own light shine, we consciously give
other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

Check out the video of this beautiful poem in the movie Coach Carter.  Beware some PG13 language – but we think it is worth it.

How To Become a Basketball Player Development Coach

I am often asked by people all over the country how to begin a career as a player development coach.  Here are some source I find helpful.  This is a work in progress, but my goal is to share resources over time to help coaches make a living pursuing their passion and giving American Youth Basketball a serious boost. This could apply to basketball trainers, basketball player development coaches, or traditional coaches looking to impact their teams by increasing player development of individual skills.

Favorite Martin Luther King Jr. Quotes

How do some of these basketball quotes (looking for more basketball quotes that inspire… check out https://coachingtoolbox.net/filingcabinet/basketball-quotes.html (https://coachingtoolbox NULL.net/filingcabinet/basketball-quotes NULL.html)) apply to your basketball game, your family, your team, your company, your self?

“We are now faced with the fact, my friends, that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time. Life often leaves us standing bare, naked, and dejected with a lost opportunity. The tide in the affairs of men does not remain at flood — it ebbs. We may cry out desperately for time to pause in her passage, but time is adamant to every plea and rushes on. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words, “Too late.”

“Hate can not drive out hate”

“Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can’t ride you unless your back is bent.”

“Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.”

‘Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.’

Former College Athlete And Parent Reviews Austin Youth Basketball

Chris, thank you so much for your commitment and time with my son. I am amazed how quickly he has improved his core skills, court awareness, and confidence.   The best compliment I can provide came from my son when he recently told me: “the more time I spend with coach Chris, the more I love the game of basketball”.

Steven Horan

(Parent of Matthew and former Division 1 baseball star)
