Austin Basketball Yoga Video

Really cold Sunday here in Austin that had many people clamoring for their couches, remotes and a blanket. Our basketball warriors got together for our Basketball Yoga Workshop and worked on clearing their minds, actively stretching their bodies, and restoring range of motion to heal damage done on the court.

14 players, 3 uber-cool Moms, and I went thru a basketball yoga workshop developed by Julie Westervelt and me and had a wonderful time. More details to follow, but the response was overwhelmingly positive.

I want to sincerely thank Julie Westervelt for an above and beyond job preparing a basketball specific curriculum to focus on stabilizing ankle, knees and core areas while teaching us poses and sequences. Julie is a renowned yoga professional who specializes in yoga for athletes and young athletes in particular. Many of you know her from Lifetime Fitness or Castle Hill gyms. Our families know how hard I work to bring passionate and expert advisors to our kids and Julie proved no exception after vetting revealed spectacular references form Fitness pros like Jamie Cassaday and Educators like Michelle Corbett of Eanes ISD. After interviewing her a few times we knew she was perfect and were very, very lucky to have her help us now and hopefully moving forward.

Jill Borreson (headed off to Columbia University to play her basketball next year) said it was a “10” and she realized how she could really improve her athletic performance. One mom texted me to give it an “11” and said her Varsity daughter was so relaxed and relieved from muscle soreness that she took a nap and that she never takes naps. I felt remarkably better this morning.

The guys who attended mentioned how challenging it was and remarked how amazing one of the moms in attendance had such flexibility. They realized they had work to do and wanted to know when the next session was.

Stay tuned for announcements for our next workshop. We also do team training should you want to book a workshop for your team or join us at our next event. Call Chris at 512.921.4444 for more details or sign up for our newsletter.

Austin Basketball Yoga Workshop

Austin Basketball Yoga Workshop – A Great Idea

Rescheduled – Date Coming Soon!

Austin Youth Basketball has developed an exciting opportunity to create a dedicated space to relax, stretch, go inward – Basketball Yoga.  Yoga provides specific tools to dive into your own breath and body and find your center.  Basketball is a beautiful, dynamic sport but it does take a toll on the body.

Today, our kids are pushed to the brink.  Between school, technology, sports, relationships…they are under a tremendous amount of pressure.  A regular yoga practice can provide quiet time and space away from so much external stimulation and noise.  True leaders spend quiet time thinking, planning and goal-setting.

Why basketball yoga?

The idea is to lay a foundation where kids can learn some of the physical and mental benefits from some standard yoga poses and sequences.  Kids can then can take their practice into their own hands when their schedules permit.  Even if they only have 10 minutes, they can connect to their bodies and become more alert and centered through yoga.  Hopefully, it will become a lifetime practice and the sooner the journey begins, the more benefit is available.

Playing basketball puts stress on the joints of the body…shoulders, knees, ankles and hips.  Range of motion can be limited by routine movement patterns.  Yogically, work can be done to open up and stretch the body to counterpose all of the work that is asked of the joints.  Work done on the court can produce tight, inflexible muscles which can lead to dreaded injuries.  Learning and incorporating some simple stretching techniques can really pay off in the long term.

Basketball Yoga is one piece of the puzzle of a comprehensive training program for athletic and personal development.

Basketball Yoga – Top Ten Benefits

by Julie Westervelt

Are you basketball yoga curious? Have you been told by a friend, medical professional, coworker or relative that you should really try yoga? Chances are that ‘take a yoga class’ is on your to-do list right now! Here are practical reasons why taking a basketball yoga workshop is a good idea.

10. Repair damage that your body has endured on the court. Between practices and games, basketball can be hard on your body. Yoga can help restore and rejuvenate you.

9. Learn how to prevent common injuries. Joints a little unstable? Challenging your balance in yoga can strenghthen the stabilizer muscles in the ankles and knees.

8. Learn some of the physical and mental benefits from some standard yoga poses and sequences so you can take your health into your own hands and practice yoga when you have time.

7. Work done on the court can produce tight, inflexible muscles which can lead to dreaded injuries. Yoga improves elasticity. Learning and incorporating some simple stretching techniques can really pay off in the long term.

6. Yoga Workshops are generally topic-based. A basketball workshop will address breathing techniques, stretches and information specific to the bodies of basketball players.

5. A Basketball Yoga Workshop is a family event. Enjoy a shared experience with your family. Always a good idea!

4. Practicing yoga can provide quiet time and space away from external stimulation and noise. True champions spend quiet time thinking, planning and goal-setting.

3. Learn specific tools to become more alert and centered in your own body.
Improve your focus and concetration on and off the court.

2. Explore and expand range of motion in your joints. Training for an individual sport can limit joint capacity by working in routine movement patterns. Yoga can open up and stretch the body to counterpose all of the strain on the joints.

1. Yoga is one piece of the puzzle of a comprehensive training program for athletic and personal development. Taking a Basketball Yoga workhsop is a great place to start.
