Austin Summer Basketball Camps vs. Austin Select Basketball

Here is a pretty funny video made by Alan Stein who is one of the premier strength and conditioning coaches in the country and his take on the quest to get exposure in summer select basketball.  Select basketball definitely has a place in player development, but more games don’t make a player.  Players are made in the offseason.  Basketball Training focused on learning, repetitions, and hard work is where the improvement develops.  Select Ball is the proving grounds.  If you don’t bring your A game, you won’t get exposure, you will get exposed.

Austin Basketball Camp Decisions

Consider Quality Austin Summer Basketball Camps

or

Austin Basketball Training

as an alternative to more offensive set practices and and travel time.

Work on your game… then get exposure.

Austin Summer Basketball Camp – Why Mike VandeGarde Is Our Camp Director…

Choosing the Austin Basketball Camp Director

by Chris Corbett

As the director of Austin Youth Basketball I have many roles.  One of the main roles of a leader is to constantly be on the lookout for the best talent available to help Austin Basketball players reach their individual goals.

I met Mike VandeGarde in a community I used to work in and immediately hit it off sharing our love of basketball.  Not long later we had a chance to play together at LifeTime Fitness in South Austin and I was immediately struck by his excellent baskeball footwork, off the chart shot blocking skills, intensity, and work ethic.

I asked him to join me on a team and we did go on to win the Life Time Fitness Championship which was a very competitive basketball league at the time.  Mike referred a few young players to me for training as I was the Supervisor of Training for Basketball at Lifetime.  As our training numbers grew, I needed help and Mike was kind enough to help teach the Austin Basketball Camps at LifeTime Fitness with me.

The next call of duty was the Dripping Springs Youth Sports Academy where we created a curriculum for the 8-12 years olds of Dripping Springs.  Mike still assists with this.

Mike is Austin Youth Basketball’s resident Big Man Clinic professor and helps out when his schedule permits.

Austin Basketball Camp Director Mike VandeGarde and His Home TeamThere are a lot of great basketball resumes out there.  Click here to see Mike’s .  We chose Mike over everyone else because:

  1. Mike is expert and PASSIONATE.
  2. Mike truly cares about the basketball learning experience and has taught at hundreds of basketball camps.
  3. Mike comes prepared and organized.  Players do not stand around when Mike is running basketball camps.  He does not have time for small talk – he is on a mission.
  4. Mike commands attention thru his passion, his expertise, and his presence.
  5. Basically, Mike has a thoroughbred background but has the work ethic of a Clydesdale.
  6. Mike believes in doing smaller camps and in keeping instructor to student ratios low despite the higher costs.  (Our summer basketball camps will have approximately 25 kids per session)
  7. Mike aims for fun at camps.  Learning and Fun are the goals.

Austin Summer Basketball Camp vs. Basketball Training

How to Choose Between Austin  Basketball Camps and Training When Budget and Time Are Constraints

Austin Summer Basketball Camp vs. Basketball TrainingAustin Summer Basketball Camps are often a great way for young players to learn some skills, develop more passion, compete in scrimmages and competitions, and to have a great week of basketball.

Camps typically do teach to the mean and if money or time are constraints, budget can often be best spent on 3 sessions with a qualified basketball trainer in private basketball lessons or personalized player development basketball training.  If those 3 sessions were reinforced with repetition on the court of the newly acquired skills, this might go a long way for the right kid.

For the kid who needs to get a little more battle hardened, needs to put fun back in the game after a long season, then camp might be the best route to go.

Both options are a great experiences for the kids here at Austin Youth Basketball.

Austin Summer Basketball Camp Scams?

Austin Private Basketball LessonsBeware Youth Basketball Camp Scams

Scams are not typical in the Austin basketball camp world.

There have been stories in the press about former athletes scamming young players and their parents out of basketball camp money.

Ex New Mexico State basketball player Daniel Hicks brainstormed a basketball camp and scammed several  young basketball hoopsters out of $500 per player.

Basketball Camp kids traveled from all over the world to play in Hicks scam/camp, but quickly found out the “basketball camp” was  a way for Hicks to cash in.   Kids weren’t fed for days at a time and had very little spending  money.

Hicks said he was trying to bring an academic and basketball experience toin West Virginia.  It’s hard to believe Daniel Hicks after reading all the legal charges against him that it was his intent to help students become better basketball players.  You wonder how to avoid basketball scams and people like Hicks.

First of all, do your research.  Check the background of the basketball trainer or ex player who is in charge or the lead instructor.  Google them.  Google their name and reviews.  See if their rates are in line.  Ask if they have a criminal background check.

Ask questions about the camp and what all they offer.  Do they offer room and board?   What skills will your kids be learning?   And most importantly who will be teaching your kids? Another good indication if this is a legit camp or not is the website.  Does the business have it’s own physical location?

If the website looks professionally done, it’s should give you a good idea whether or not the camp is legitimate.  How long has the website been up?  How long has the business been in existence?  Can they provide a lengthy list of references?

Be leery of any camp that are out of town or in some cases as in the Hicks case, in another country.

Follow your instinct.  do your homework.
